Marble, Charles Harry 91, of Champaign, IL died July 15, 2024. Charlie, born on November
16, 1932, in Salem, MA, to Lawrence E. and Grace Marble, was a hardworking family man
known for his devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather. Overcoming many challenges
in his early life, he instilled strong values in his children and dedicated his time to
supporting those around him. Charlie was resolutely honest, fair, and kind, with a bone-dry
sense of humor and an infectious hearty laugh.
Charlie is survived by his three children: Jennifer Look Marble, John Addison Marble, and
Alison (Marble) Reddy, as well as three grandchildren: William Charles Ahlgren, Katherine
Mary Ahlgren, and Samuel Ganesh Reddy. His grandchildren will always remember his
kindness and patience, while his children cherish memories of his unwavering support and
dedication. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Robert and Winona.
Charlie loved fishing and had a deep avidity for the ocean. He enjoyed watching sports,
was quite a movie buff and was an avid international traveler. Charlie graduated from
Keene High School, where he was a football star, and then served his country as an
airplane mechanic in the Air Force during the Korean War. This led to his first career with
Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut, followed by a successful tenure in construction in the
greater Boston area, where he served as an estimator and president of a commercial
construction company.
In his final career, Charlie, along with his then-wife Deedy Marble, became innkeepers at
the Governor's Inn in Ludlow, Vermont. Guests fondly remember his engaging stories
during breakfast or in the lounge before dinner. Charlie and Deedy were married for over
forty years and remained close friends until his passing.
Charlie, a native New Englander, spent most of his life there until retiring in Illinois, where
he loved watching his grandchildren grow and being a daily part of their lives.
We mourn with heavy hearts and a profound sense of loss for a man who loved deeply and
was deeply loved in return. Charlie will be buried in the Newell Family Plot in Addison,
Maine. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Champaign Public Library.
