Obituary for Bernadette D. Berg
Bernadette (Bernie) Delores Berg, 75, of Danville, passed away at 5:15 a.m., Monday, November 16, 2020 at the Villas of Holly Brook in Danville, IL with her daughter by her side.
She was born on February 1, 1945 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, the youngest child of Andrew J. Barteck and Mary (Holecz) Barteck. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School, Schlarman High School, and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing School in Chicago.
Bernie married and had two children with Robert (Bob) Berg. Although the marriage did not last, she and Bob cooperated to raise their children. At that time Bernie began working, first in the ER at St. Elizabeth Hospital, then for Drs. Ed and Petra Warren, Dr. John Adams, and eventually for Carle Clinic as their private practices transitioned. She happily retired from Carle Clinic in 2010 with over 33 years of service.
Survivors include her children: daughter, Angie (Greg) Lazzell of Danville, IL, and son, Mark Berg of Kailua, HI; grandchildren: Jacob (Molly) Lazzell, and Jordan (Staci Tutwiler) Lazzell; great grandchildren, Evelyn and Declan Lazzell; sister, Mary Carter; brother-in-law, Tom Maire; several nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elizabeth Maire; her brother, Andrew “Sonny” Barteck; and a special aunt, Margaret Hurst.
Bernie was a private person; a hard worker, who was extremely proud of her family, and always made sure that they were provided for. She enjoyed good food, fine wine, listening to music (especially the concerts in Lincoln Park), and spending time with a few of her closest friends (classmates from SHS Class of 63 and some of her past Carle co-workers). She liked hunting for antiques and collected vintage perfume bottles and anything related to her Slovok heritage. She was a fiercely independent person, preferring to do things “her way” and on her schedule, and for all of this she will be greatly missed.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Memory Care at Reflections of Holly Brook; especially Lorena, Suzie, Tina, Kebran and Chellsea. Your love and compassion helped to make her feel safe, and at home for the last few weeks of her life.
Per her wishes, she will be cremated with no funeral. A Christian Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westville on Saturday, November 28 at 10 a.m., and she will be laid to rest in Resurrection Cemetery. It is kindly requested that those in attendance wear a face mask and practice social distancing.

Memorial donations may be given in her name to Schlarman High School Foundation or the Humane Society of Danville.
